Annoyingthing.net

From The Crazy Frog Wiki
Crazy Frog wearing The Annoying Thing merchandise advertised on the front page of the site.

http://annoyingthing.net was the original web domain for The Annoying Thing, until websites were later created under the Crazy Frog name. Its original function was to sell merchandise of The Annoying Thing, give news on the frog, as well as link to the original The Annoying Thing video clip, hosted on turboforce3d.com. After the domain had been abandoned for nearly a decade, it was purchased in 2020 by MeloNinja to host this wiki. Most history of this website is documented and hosted on https://archive.org.

2005

It appears as though the website was created around December 2004 to January 2005. The first capture from archive.org, dated January 11, 2005[1], marks the website's primary goal being to sell merchandise:

The tab for "a little history" shows some of an interview with Erik Wernquist by Newtek Europe[2]:

"The Annoying Thing is a superb animation. Tell me about the soundtrack.

Thank you! I didn't reflect on the fact that I didn't know who created the sound until I was encouraged to put the animation up on my site. A friend sent it to me as an mp3 file some years ago. When I finished the animation I didn't know who to credit for the sound, so I put it as a question in the end credits. Because of the huge spread my animation got throughout the internet I started to get piles and piles of emails with all kinds of suggestions on whose voice hid behind this hilarious noise.

A little more than a month after I had put the animation up I got a phone call from a somewhat confused person claiming he recognised the sound in my animation as his own creation. His name was Daniel Malmedahl and he said he had been contacted by a friend of his telling him to check out my website. I was a little uncertain at first but when he gave me the "proof" of performing the sound live on the phone there was no doubt he was the guy I was looking for. Apparently he was oblivious to the fact that his sound had spread around the internet, even before the Annoying Thing. He told me the he didn't actually make that sound as a joke at first, but as a serious attempt to imitate the 2-stroke engine of a moped of his. He has a talent and interest in imitating the sound of engines. This was about six years ago, and it wasn't until a friend of his put the sound on a CD that they used to play at parties he realised the hilarious quality of the noise. From that CD, the sound somehow found its way to the internet and eventually ended up in my mailbox. After having been contacted by Daniel I changed the credits of the animation and on my site. The old version is still around of course and I still get plenty of e-mails from people wanting to help me with clues as to find the creator of the sound. When I get time I do my best to reply and give Daniel Malmedahl the credit he deserves, as sadly none of the tips I get ever include his name!

What are you working on at the moment?

The Annoying Thing seems to remain my destiny for a while longer. My current occupation involves him as the star in a TV commercial and some print ads for a company called Harley World in Amsterdam. I have granted them limited rights to the character and have a lot of creative freedom to do an animation pretty much as a sequel to the first one. It contains a slightly different wardrobe for "the thing", but what I find most exiting about it is that I was able to involve Daniel Malmedahl to do a brand new sound for it. And this time, the Annoying Thing will attempt to ride a real bike!"

2006 and onward

Screenshot of annoyingthing.net, from early 2006 onward, until the domain was parked.

Around October 13, 2005[3], most of the content on the site was reduced to a few hyperlinks. At this point, the merchandise had been moved to theannoyingthingstuff.com. Around early 2007, the content from there had been moved to the main page. About mid-2007, captures from archive.org slowed down, as the website had been parked by a domain registrar, and only featured sponsored listings for ringtones or "funny videos." In 2008, it appears to have been moved to a different registrar, but was still parked.

Notably, on December 29, 2010[4], the website was nothing but a blank page stating that "This Account Has Been Suspended." It's unclear what this might have meant.

Some time after 2010, the domain was unlocked and could be bought. In 2020, it was bought by MeloNinja for a $12 per year subscription. It currently hosts this wiki.
